How to Speak a Language without Knowing It
We develop a system that lets people overcome language barriers by letting them speak a language they do not know. Our system accepts text entered by a user, translates the text, then converts the translation into a phonetic spelling in the user’s own orthography. We trained the system on phonetic spellings in travel phrasebooks.
متن کاملHow to avoid knowing it
Beliefs have been formally modelled in the last decades using doxastic logics. The possible worlds model and its associated Kripke semantics provide an intuitive semantics for these logics, but they seem to commit us to model agents that are logically omniscient (they believe every classical tautology) and perfect reasoners (their beliefs are closed under classical deductive closure). Thus, thi...
متن کاملOn knowing how it feels
The article by Zempi and Awan brings together two studies that bear upon a longstanding epistemological question about the connection between subjectivity, experience, and knowledge. Both studies emerged out of a similar interpellation that occurred during the process of doing research: a recurrent comment by the research subjects to the researchers, suggesting that the latter ‘don’t know how i...
متن کاملLearning to Bid Without Knowing
We address online learning in complex auction settings, such as sponsored search auctions, where the value of the bidder is unknown to her, evolving in an arbitrary manner and observed only if the bidder wins an allocation. We leverage the structure of the utility of the bidder to provide algorithms with regret rates against the best fixed bid in hindsight, that are exponentially faster in conv...
متن کاملThe Knowing Organization: How Organizations Use Information to Construct Meaning, Create Knowledge and Make Decisions
An organization uses information strategically in three areas: to make sense of change in its environment; to create new knowledge for innovation; and to make decisions about courses of action. These apparently distinct processes are in fact complementary pieces of a larger canvas, and the information behaviors analyzed in each approach interweave into a richer explanation of information use in...
